Synopsis
Fabian (Sid Lucero), an intellectual who is sickened by the corruption and apathy of his country, commits a double murder to save a woman from a money-lender who is making her life impossible. However it is Joaquin (Archie Alemania), the woman’s husband who leaves his wife and children on their own, who is accused and sentenced to life imprisonment. While Joaquin gradually experiences a spiritual transformation in prison, Fabian continues to torment himself over the crime he has committed. Presented in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2013 Cannes Festival, Norte, the End of History is inspired by the literary masterpiece by Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, to investigate the origin of evil in the province of Ilocos Norte, the extreme tip of the Philippines and the birthplace of Ferdinand Marcos, the military dictator who dominated the country for twenty years. For his eleventh feature film, Diaz abandons black and white photography for a film with dense colours and strong contrasts, creating an epic and monumental work that tells a story of violence, hatred and fear with images of extraordinary dramatic and visual power.
